This generation of Nigerians and indeed the future generation have no country other than Nigeria, we shall stay and salvage it together!’
That was the rousing quote from Buhari as head of state at the commencement of his eventful 20 months stewardship of the country as a military ruler between 1984 and 1985.
General Buhari’s bid to return as a civilian leader of the country follows an intrinsic inclination that he above many other contemporaries is better positioned to salvage the country from the twin attacks of corruption and insurgency that have lately bestirred the nation.
The pointers towards Buhari’s capacity are indeed informed by his testimony in public office when as minister of petroleum and subsequently as head of state he according to President Olusegun Obasanjo was not found wanting on the issue of cornering oil acreages to himself or acquaintances.
Also as a General Officer Commanding, GOC the Armoured Command in Jos, Buhari was known to have forcefully routed insurgents that came into the country from Chad, the same country that is now generally believed to be instigating the insurgency by the Islamic militant group, Boko Haram.
Buhari’s return to public life was as chairman of the Petroleum (Special) Task Force, PTF during the Sanni Abacha years. From that position he was known to have facilitated the rehabilitation of a special segment of the nation’s infrastructural landscape including roads, schools, hospitals among others. It is thus not surprising that in the face of the increasing despondency in the land that Buhari has become a figure to be looked up to.

Remarkably, his rivals see him as a stringent and unbending person. But that is not true. He has shown that he has the capacity to accommodate as given by his increasing readiness to mix even without giving up the principles he was known for.
His foes describe him as an Islamic fundamentalist but none has been able to give a backing to this. They cleverly overlook the fact that his driver for years is a Christian. They also forget that his cook who even prepares his food even during the Islamic month of fasting, is a Christian.
So, Buhari is going to the convention as a favourite among other aspirants.
Presidential candidate
Before now, Buhari’s name had been on many lips as the likely presidential candidate of the APC, making assertions that he might carry the day promising.
Having contested for the presidency in 2003, 2007 and 2011, Buhari cant be described as a rockie in the game.
Until Atiku Abubakar came into the party he was generally seen as the consensus presidential candidate of the party. Surprising for his critics, Buhari welcomed Atiku and other new entrants nay, rivals with open arms and helped to integrate them into the party. He has now taken up the challenge from them for the presidential ticket and has marketed himself to many strategic stakeholders of the party.
With most of the north backing Buhari, and increasing proportion of Southern voters looking up to him to salvage Nigeria, Buhari is a good pick to push the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the edges. Though he might appear difficult to market in the South due to some prejudiced perceptions about him, APC’s acceptability in the south is likely to favour him.
Notwithstanding, feelings that Buhari’s politics is defined by integrity, are unanimous.
Buhari had contested for the presidency on the platform of the All Nigerian People’s Party ,ANPP, and Congress for Progressive Change ,CPC.
Known as a disciplined leader, who abhorred corruption while in office, Buhari, who hails from Katsina State was born December 17, 1942 in Daura.
FAMED for his traversal of many political parties since 1999, Rochas Okorocha, does not come as across as a greenhorn on the scene..
With this known image of a nomadic politician, Okorocha, who contested for the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, governorship ticket in 1999, made a failed attempt at getting the presidential ticket of the defunct All Peoples Party,APP, in 2003. To many Nigerians, Okorocha who defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Grand Alliance,APGA, does not pose a threat to other aspirants.
This is largely as a result of the belief that his criss-crossing of most parties, portrays him as someone bereft of ideology.
Remarkable marks
His defeat of Ikedi Ohakim as governor of Imo State in 2011, came with a lot of expectations from his people. But opinions are still divided as to whether he had actually made remarkable marks in the state.
In some quarters, Okorocha is seen as a detribalized Nigerian made, as a result of his place of birth and upbringing.
The businessman turned politician was born on September 22, 1962, in Ogboko, Ideato South, Imo State. He attended Juladaco High School, Jos (1976-1981).
